Keynote Lecture:
The Changing Landscape of the Medical Laboratories: What’s the New Normal?

Dr Tengku Norita Tengku Yazid
Head of National Pathology Services,
Ministry of Health Malaysia

Dr Tengku Norita Tengku Yazid graduated with MBBS (University of Malaya, 1992) and MPath (Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, 1999). She is currently the Head of National Pathology Services, Ministry of Health Malaysia. She is a Consultant Chemical Pathologist and the Head of Pathology Department at Hospital Selayang.

Dr Tengku Norita is the coordinator for the Pathology NIA programme at the Ministry of Health and a committee member for National Chemical Pathology Service Committee and Chemical Pathology Subcommittee of the National Pathology QA Programme, Ministry of Health, as well as the pathology services representative for the MOH National QA Technical Committee.

She is also a Technical Assessor for the Skim Akreditasi Makmal Malaysia (SKMM) MS ISO 15189 for the field of chemical pathology and a committee member of the SIRIM Technical Committee for Medical Devices - Clinical Laboratory Testing and In-Vitro Diagnostic Test Systems Subcommittee. She is also a member of the College of Pathologist, Academy of Medicine Malaysia, Malaysian Association of Clinical Biochemists (MACB), Malaysian Endocrine and Metabolic Society, Association for Clinical Biochemistry United Kingdom and International Association for Therapeutic Drug Monitoring and Clinical Toxicology.

Plenary Lecture 1:
Roles of Medical Testing in Enhancing Country's Healthcare Reform in the 21st Century

Dr Rabindra Abeyasinghe
World Health Organisation (WHO) Representative to Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam and Singapore

Dr Rabi Abeyasinghe is the WHO Representative to Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam and Singapore. Prior to that, he was the WHO Representative to the Philippines. He was acting Director Health Security and Emergencies at the World Health Organizations Regional Office for the Western Pacific (WPRO) based in Manila, Philippines from 30th April 2020 to 21st June 2020, supporting the regional response to COVID-19. He was Coordinator, Malaria Other Vectorborne and Parasitic Diseases at WPRO from 2015 – 2019 and has served WHO since 2011 in various capacities including acting Director Communicable Diseases WPRO (May to October 2018, May to July 2019), Regional Entomologist WPRO and Technical Officer Malaria in Papua New Guinea.

Dr Rabi is a Medical Specialist MD (Community Medicine) from the University of Colombo, Sri Lanka. Additionally, he has a MSc in Biology & Control of Disease Vectors from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, and a Diploma in Tropical Medicine & Hygiene from the Royal College of Physicians, London. Earlier he held several senior positions in the Ministry of Health, Sri Lanka including Director National Malaria Control Programme and Project Director, GFATM Projects.

He is a Fellow of the College of Community Physicians of Sri Lanka and a past President of the College of Community Physicians of Sri Lanka.
 
 
 

Plenary Lecture 2:
Global Infectious Diseases Elimination in the Next Decade

Prof. Dato' Dr Adeeba Kamarulzaman
President and Pro Vice Chancellor of Monash University Malaysia

Professor Adeeba Kamarulzaman, President and Pro Vice-Chancellor of Monash University Malaysia, previously served as Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at University Malaya. She graduated from Monash University in 1987 and trained in internal medicine and infectious diseases at the Monash Medical Centre and Fairfield Infectious Diseases Hospital, Melbourne, Australia.

She is also an Honorary Professor at UM and an Adjunct Associate Professor at Yale University, USA. She is actively involved in HIV prevention, treatment, and care programs and holds leadership positions as Chairman of the Malaysian AIDS Foundation and Past President of the International AIDS Society. She has contributed significantly to the establishment and activities of the regional HIV research network initiative, TREAT Asia.

Additionally, she has advised various WHO, UNAIDS, and UNODC committees on HIV/AIDS and served as Co-Chair of WHO's Scientific and Technical Advisory Committee (STAC) for HIV. She is the founding Chair of the ROSE Foundation, an organization dedicated to eliminating cervical cancer in Malaysia and the region. Professor Adeeba has received numerous national and international awards for her achievements, including the prestigious Merdeka Award.

In April 2015, Monash University honored her with a Doctor of Laws (honoris causa) for her contributions to medicine and role as a health advocate.

It was established in 1988 as the Malaysian Federation of Medical Laboratory Technologists (MFMLT) from the merging of 3 medical laboratory technologist associations from University of Malaya (UM), National University of Malaysia (UKM) and Institute for Medical Research (IMR), Ministry of Health Malaysia.
